What Are Asthma Attacks?

If you have asthma, you are at risk for an asthma attack. When an attack happens, the muscles in your throat tighten, and it becomes hard to breathe. You may wheeze or cough, and you may feel pain in your chest.

If you have asthma, talk to your doctor. He or she may prescribe you medication (drugs) to prevent an attack or to treat your asthma. Drugs to treat asthma are usually given through an inhaler or a nebulizer, also known as a breathing machine. These drugs lessen the swelling in your lungs so you can breathe easier.

You can prevent asthma attacks by taking drugs as your doctor prescribes. It also helps to stay away from the things that trigger your asthma. These triggers can include pollen, mold, pet dander, smoke, exercise, or anxiety.

Fidelis Care offers a special program to members with asthma called AsthmaCare. The program helps you complete an Asthma Action Plan, which includes emergency and doctor contact information, a list of the drugs you take, and information about when to call your doctor and when to go to the emergency room.
